week 21, all kinds of reading

There is lots of reading happening at our house these days. We’re part of two separate book clubs, one for Urban Adventures (“Maya and the Robot”) and one for our Thursday learning time with friends (“Shiloh” and “A Rover’s Story”). On top of that, all three kids continue to read for pleasure; Grace has begun reading some of her short stories before bed. She has gained quite a bit of fluency and speed over the last several months. Her confidence and endurance are also growing. Here is a glimpse into her Level H reader, “Princess Truly.”

  1. Hurrah for reading!  Some of the early books I read were “Caddie Woodlawn”, “Hello, the Boat”, “The Bobsey Twins”, “The Boxcar Children”;and later, the Zane Grey westerns, and “Diamond Hill”.  Somewhere in there were the Dr. Seuss stories.  One of may favorites was “Steak for Sup-per”, although I didn’t find it until I was a grandma.  I read it aloud at a Talent Night, making a different face for each of the followers who wantedthat very expensive meat for supper.     Most of the snow has been rained away by now, but there has been quite a bit of fog, sometimes lasting most of the day.  Papaw is in Elkhart all day for a swim meet, the last of a tournament that started Thurs. night.     Perhaps you can watch the You-Tube that Melvin filmed of Denille’s bell choir at the UMC’s 11:00 P.M. Christmas Eve service.  She had honored Jim and me by asking us to ring withher, Alexis and Olivia, and Nate and Aimee.  Such a treat for us!  Love to you individually and as a family from GrGr/GrGr
