We headed to Battelle Darby Creek Metro Park for a morning of nature study and boy, did we see some neat finds!
Since everything was pretty squishy, we found some great animal tracks. The boys identified these as raccoon.
We also nearly stepped on this guy when we were walking along the trail. My best guess is a Kirtland’s snake, but I’m not too schooled on reptile identification!
**After more research and texting with Dad, we’re thinking this is more likely a fancy-looking garter snake instead. A Kirtland’s snake has a red belly, but we didn’t get a belly-side view.
“I think it’s a leopard frog, but I don’t know if they live in Ohio,” says Courben. After doing some searching online, I think he’s right!
We finished our morning with lunch and time on the playground. All in all, a two mile hike on a gorgeous morning with three adventurous kiddos was the perfect way to spend our day.
